The following is a list of books that I feel are outstanding. Each one is written by a knowledgeable author and contains very useful, helpful, and I believe, accurate information. For each book, I include my own brief (or not so brief) descriptive review. Oftentimes, some of the best books on various subjects are not readily available. This is especially true in the health and nutrition area. I have begun carrying certain books simply to make them more easily accessible for my clients and students. Please let me know if you wish to purchase a particular book on this list or are unable to find one in the stores. I do realize that there are quite a few books on this list; however, I have distilled them down from the many hundreds of titles which are currently being sold. Prices listed are subject to change.GENERAL HEALTH AND NUTRITION

I do not recommend that people go around treating themselves and the illnesses they think they have; however, the following books allow you to read the authors' suggestions for various maladies. Often it can be beneficial to get a doctor's diagnosis before deciding to try a non-medical remedy. It may be a problem, however, to locate a physician who is able to correctly diagnose your illness. When you find a good doctor, keep him/her.

Confessions of a Medical Heretic by Robert Mendelsohn, MD
Although this book was written many years ago, it is still as accurate, important and applicable today
as it was when Dr. Mendelsohn wrote it. The author was a highly respected physician who ran departments in
many hospitals. His expose of what occurs in the medical profession is both scarey and eye opening. The
information you learn might easily save your life or that of a family member. At the very least, it will open your
eyes to how money and profits are far more important in medicine, than your health, honesty or any form
Racketeering In Medicine by James P. Carter, M.D., Dr. P.H.
I have met dozens of seemingly intelligent people who truly believe that the A.M.A., F.D.A., and all physicians are working only with the best interests of the public in mind. I have met many doctors who mistakenly believe that if any treatment to help or cure disease were well researched, these treatments and studies would always be published in their mainstream medical journals. Most of us believe that any medicine, which is extremely hazardous to those receiving it and which seems to be legal only for the purpose of making millions of dollars for its manufacturer, would surely be taken off the market. These beliefs are simply not accurate! Racketeering in Medicine and Dirty Medicine will explain to any reader exactly what has been and is being done in this arena. If you are interested in the truth even if it destroys your current beliefs, then buy and read at least one of these books, then lend it to a friend. If you are a physician, please read them before putting down a patient for asking about alternative or nutritional medicine.

Guess What Came To Dinner by Ann Louise Gittleman
Sweet Suicide by Gene Wright (1990)
Sugar Blues by William Dufty (1975)
Lick The Sugar Habit by Nancy Appleton (1988)
Many of us have the mistaken idea that if we are not overweight, then sugar consumption is not a problem. The rest of us feel that we should probably eat less sweets, but let's start doing that tomorrow. After all, they are not really that bad for us, are they? The answer is a resounding YES. They are actually even worse than that. All three of these books are well written and will completely change your minds about sugars, while they help you improve your health. They were written years apart, but neither sugar nor its effects on the body has changed, so that does not matter. Buy one and read it at the risk of better health and a greatly reduced chance of getting an avoidable degenerative disease many years from now. Sugars and the wrong kind of fats are your health's worst enemies.
Stuck within the millions of cells in my brain are a plethora of book titles on a never-ending number of subjects. If you are trying to find a book on a particular subject, give me a call. The worst that could happen is that I will not be able to help you.

Controversial Books 3021 University Avenue, San Diego, 296-1560
Along Adams Avenue in San Diego, there are a slew of used bookstores. This area has been referred to as "book store row" for over a decade. I dare you to spend an hour (or three) in these stores and not buy a bunch of books. Now, if only you could find the time to read a couple of them.

The following is a list of nutritional and alternative health newsletters and magazines. I include only those that I feel are written by people who are well versed in their fields and whom I respect. For each one I give a brief description, annual subscription price and phone number. I receive a number of additional publications which would be too technical to recommend to the general public, but please let me now if you would be interested in these journals as well.
